The science behind cold water exposure
In the study, "The Effect of Cold Water Immersion on Post-Exercise Recovery" participants who engaged in cold water immersion after intense exercise experienced faster recovery times and reduced muscle soreness compared to those who used passive recovery methods. The cold water worked its magic by reducing inflammation, promoting blood circulation, and aiding the removal of metabolic waste.
In another study from 2020 called 'Cold Showers as a Potential Strategy for Metabolic Health' researchers showed that cold exposure activated brown fat — a type of fat that burns calories to generate heat — leading to increased energy expenditure and overall improved metabolic health.
And in one of the largest studies of it's kind on the subject, 'The Psychological and Physiological Benefits of Winter Swimming' researchers revealed that winter swimmers experienced enhanced mood, decreased tension, and improved overall well-being. The cold water immersion induced a release of endorphins and reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Everybody's ice bath protocol will be different but there's a few basic rules to follow that will help you find your ice bath routine.
Keep your ice bath below 15 degrees.
Only below this temperature will you get cryotherapy benefits.
You should aim for 1 minute per degree of water temperature.
10 degree = 10 minutes
12 degrees = 12 minutes
It's a very basic principle to follow and something to aim for if you're just starting out.
Listen to your body.
Always make sure what you're doing feels right. It's meant to be uncomfortable but there are dangers for ice bathing for too long, listen to your body and stay consistent.
